A Word from Rev. Susan on Resuming Worship in Person
Dear People of Good Shepherd,
I am so grateful that most of us are able to gather virtually during this time. We are working on how to include everyone in our Zoom worship on Sundays. I miss seeing you all in person! I miss our normal way of doing church. I miss singing, laughing, praying, and talking with you all in person before and after services. However, our priority is love of neighbor, and the safety of all, especially the most vulnerable. Here is a statement from our working task force, endorsed by the Executive Committee this week. We have been in discernment since the beginning of May, using the best guidance from our bishop and from medical experts.
May 27, 2020
As directed by our bishop, Good Shepherd has a task force in place to look at what will be required for us to safely worship together in person at some time in the future. The task force has been working since the first week of May. Our congregation is overwhelmingly in the over 65 age group which is still strongly discouraged from attending any in-person worship, both by the state guidelines and by the direction of our bishop. Therefore, no decision has yet been made on a date to begin in-person worship. When we do begin it will be outside, as outside spaces are much safer than indoor spaces. For now, though, we will continue our worship and meetings on Zoom.
All of us keep praying for an effective treatment for, and a vaccine to prevent, COVID-19. Our task force is working on the question of what God may be calling us TO in this strange time of pandemic. Good Shepherd church has never closed. We continue to be open for worship, prayer, fellowship, and normal committee meetings, all on Zoom and over the telephone. I have faith that God is calling us to new ways of living out our baptismal ministry in the world. Know that you are all in my prayers, that you are precious in God’s sight.
