Introducing Our Seminarian
Hello to all of my new friends at Good Shepherd! My name is Brian Petersen, and I am excited to be joining your community as a seminarian for the next six months as I complete my Theological Field Education program through the diocesan School for Ministry.
I am currently a Postulant to the priesthood in our diocese and have been on the journey of discernment for about the last year. My sponsoring parish is Holy Cross, Carlsbad, where I have been a member for 4 years and just finished a three-year term serving on the Bishop’s Committee. I am also currently enrolled in the low-residency Certificate of Anglican Studies program at Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, and I have a Master of Theological Studies degree from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary (which is now known as Gateway Seminary).
Prior to going to college and seminary, I served in the US Marine Corps and was stationed at Camp Pendleton. I grew up on San Diego County but have also spent a significant amount of time living in Portland, Oregon and in New York City. Currently my family lives in Murrieta, where we moved about six months ago. My wife, Kelly, and I have been married for 22 years, and we have three children – Luke (18), Abigail (11), and Max (14 months). I also work full-time in the software industry as a product manager and have been working remotely for the same company for the last 7 years. When I am not working or studying I enjoy hiking in our beautiful local mountains and hills, and coaching girls’ softball.
I am very passionate about ministry in the community, and especially among people who are marginalized, oppressed, or forgotten. Along with a passion for justice, I love to preach and teach, and I am always learning as a student of God’s word. I want to thank all those who I have met so far for your warm welcome, and I am looking forward to meeting the rest of the congregation very soon. I am honored and excited to be able to join with the Good Shepherd community in following where God is leading you!
